Rover's Tale – Water, Lava River & Waterfall VFX
For Rover's Tale, I was responsible for creating several environment effects that helped bring the world to life while maintaining visual quality and performance.
My work included the development of the game's water material, featuring customizable parameters for color, depth, foam, and surface movement. I also created the waterfall VFX, combining shaders, particle systems, and mesh-based effects to achieve a stylized look that matched the game's artistic direction.
For the lava river, I developed both the materials and supporting VFX, including emissive effects, flow animation, and heat distortion. To achieve the final visual style, I created a set of stylized lava textures in Substance Designer, allowing for greater artistic control while maintaining consistency with the game's overall aesthetic. The lava material also makes use of Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) to add perceived depth and volume to the surface, enhancing the sense of molten rock without requiring additional geometry.
Throughout the process, I focused on balancing visual quality and performance, ensuring these effects remained efficient and scalable while supporting the atmosphere and gameplay experience of Rover's Tale.
